10 Types of Jobs at Jewish Nonprofits You Might Not Know Exist
Jewish nonprofits hire far more than rabbis and educators. Here's the real breadth of roles — and what skills transfer from secular backgrounds.
Andrew MargolinAsk someone what jobs exist at a Jewish nonprofit and they'll probably say: rabbi, Jewish studies teacher, maybe executive director. That's about 5% of the actual job market.
Jewish nonprofits are full-functioning institutions that need the same operational infrastructure as any complex organization. They need technologists, HR professionals, marketers, financial analysts, and program specialists. Here are 10 role types that are consistently in demand — and what they actually involve.
Director of Development (and Development Team Roles)
What it involves: Leading fundraising strategy — major gifts, annual campaigns, planned giving, grants, galas, and donor stewardship. Development teams at major federations and Jewish nonprofits range from 5 to 50 people.
Where it exists: Federations, JCCs, day schools, advocacy organizations (ADL, AJC, JNF), community foundations, national nonprofits.
Transferable from: Corporate sales, financial services, any nonprofit fundraising background.
Israel Programs Coordinator / Israel Engagement Manager
What it involves: Designing and running Israel travel programs, Israel advocacy and education, partnership relationships with Israeli institutions, or diaspora-Israel engagement.
Where it exists: Federations (many have Israel desks), Hillels, Jewish agencies, Israel advocacy organizations, community centers.
Transferable from: Program management, international education, travel industry. Hebrew language skills are a plus but not always required.
Communications Manager / Director of Marketing
What it involves: Running external communications — email, social media, website, press, campaigns, donor communications, event marketing. At smaller orgs, one person covers everything.
Where it exists: Every org type with a public-facing presence — federations, nonprofits, day schools, JCCs, national organizations.
Transferable from: Agency marketing, corporate communications, PR, journalism. Jewish sector fluency is learnable.
HR Business Partner / Director of People Operations
What it involves: Recruiting, onboarding, performance management, compensation, benefits, employee relations, and compliance. Jewish orgs with 50+ staff need full HR infrastructure.
Where it exists: Federations, large JCCs, national nonprofits, multi-site educational organizations.
Transferable from: Any HR background. Knowledge of nonprofit compensation structures is helpful.
Technology Director / Salesforce/CRM Administrator
What it involves: Managing donor databases (most use Salesforce or Blackbaud), IT infrastructure, data integrity, reporting, and digital systems.
Where it exists: Federations, large nonprofits, JCCs, national organizations with significant donor operations.
Transferable from: CRM administration, nonprofit tech, database management. Salesforce NPSP experience is highly valued. Raiser's Edge knowledge is common in this sector.
Youth Program Director / Camp Director
What it involves: Leading youth engagement programs, teen groups, Shabbaton events, summer camps, or after-school programming. Requires programming creativity, staff management, and parent communication.
Where it exists: Synagogues, JCCs, federations, Jewish camps, Hillels, BBYO, USY.
Transferable from: Education, camp staff experience, youth development, recreation.
Grant Writer / Foundation Relations Manager
What it involves: Researching foundation funding opportunities, writing grant proposals, managing reporting requirements, and building relationships with program officers at Jewish foundations.
Where it exists: Jewish day schools, arts organizations, social services agencies, national nonprofits.
Transferable from: Any grant writing experience. Strong writing skills and research ability matter more than sector-specific background.
Events Manager / Director of Community Engagement
What it involves: Planning and executing galas, community dinners, Shabbat programs, Israel advocacy events, and major fundraising events. Events are both community-building and revenue-generating in the Jewish sector.
Where it exists: Federations, JCCs, advocacy organizations, synagogues, day schools.
Transferable from: Events management, hospitality, project management, corporate event planning.
Finance Director / CFO
What it involves: Managing budgets, financial reporting, audit preparation, cash flow, payroll, and compliance. Jewish nonprofits have real financial complexity — endowments, restricted grant funds, deferred campaigns.
Where it exists: Federations, large JCCs, national nonprofits, educational organizations with significant endowments.
Transferable from: CPA background, nonprofit accounting, corporate finance. Knowledge of nonprofit GAAP (ASC 958) and fund accounting is highly valued.
Planned Giving Officer / Legacy Campaign Director
What it involves: Building relationships with donors around estate planning, bequests, charitable remainder trusts, and other deferred giving vehicles. A long-horizon relationship role, not transactional fundraising.
Where it exists: Federations (most large ones have dedicated legacy programs), major Jewish hospitals and universities, large Jewish nonprofits with endowment campaigns.
Transferable from: Estate planning law, financial planning, major gifts fundraising. One of the higher-compensation tracks in Jewish nonprofit development.
